CAFE, PASTA AND CLAVELES

Carmen Toledano and Lina Gestal

Senior Citizens Association and the Pablo Iglesias Vicálvaro Socialist Group, have jointly made a tribute to working women in the House of the People of this district of Madrid.

With the auditorium to overflowing Carmen Toledano, secretary of equality of the PSM and vice Gestal Lina of the association had a lucid intervention bringing to the fore issues of great interest in the historical process in relation to women.
CARMEN reminded us of the dramatic improvement in legislation that the PSOE has launched primarily for the benefit of women: The Equality Act, the law of agency, law abortion, the law against gender violence, the gay marriage bill ... all of great importance and depth in favor of women's rights and participation in cultural life, social, political and economic.

LINA, meanwhile, made a historic tour which was created by the international day of working women and the election of March 8 in remembrance and tribute to two events that occurred in New York City:
The first took place in the year 1857, with a march of women textile workers in which several thousands of women going through the wealthy neighborhoods of the city, to protest the miserable conditions in which they worked.

The second event occurred half a century later in the year 1908, when more than 40,000 large industrial plants seamstresses went on strike demanding the right to join unions, higher wages, less working time, vocational training and the rejection of child labor, whose strike, 129 workers were burnt to death in the Cotton Textile Factory, located in New York, because the factory owners had locked up their workers to not join the strike.
told us that working conditions were improving gradually reach the level of quality available today.

Thus, in March 1900, Eduardo Dato, a law enacted important feminine, related to women's work and the child, which were granted permission three weeks postpartum and one hour per day for breastfeeding.
Another important step in the improvement of women's work, was released in the year 1912 with the enactment of the famous chair Act, being president of the Council of Ministers Jose Canalejas, whose law requires employers and traders to facilitate entry to women in the workplace, the day was limited to eight hours per day and prohibits night work for women. Etc Etc.
. LINA

also brought up a number of old crafts practiced by women until recent decades and now I want to transcribe exactly one way of example, the WASHERWOMEN:
were a beloved figure in his labored bustle in the back and forth to the banks of the Manzanares River, then natural banks.
was very characteristic picture of those women suffered in the washing aligned facts for the purpose, with endless rows of clotheslines behind.
This picture, very collected by painters and photographers, was daily in winter, with freezing cold, and summer with the sun scorching the torso, kneeling on his knees washing boards, also called bench.
Sometimes Women also went to wash that incidentally had trouble making ends meet and chose discrete hours when the "boxes" were free. They were called by the regulars swallows.

reminded us that Juana Posse, Pablo Iglesias's mother was laundress swallow.
popular tradition coined the ballad clean inside, clean outside is a splash of gold, the laundry, picked up by Echegaray y Ruperto Chapi in the operetta "The plumed hat."
Among the trades were cited: Cigar, ironers, dressmakers, wet nurses, kept or Menegildo, Brazil nuts, churros, porters, spinners, escofiteras, lace, water carriers, street vendors, or carbines escorts ...

In closing the event, took a coffee and biscuits and gave a carnation each of the women attending.
